We can have our self reflected back at us by our society, and at the same time, as Giddens points out, can have a challenge in maintaining a cohesive self because of that society. · According to Giddens, living in the age of modernity presents several dilemmas related to sense of self. How would you describe the dilemma of unification vs. fragmentation?
· In the dilemma of powerlessness vs. appropriation what is the main distinction between authority in modern versus pre-modern times? How does Giddens perspective on powerlessness in modern society differ from most others who write on this topic?
· Looking at these aspects from a broader, societal view, how, according to Giddens, does fragmentation of modernity along large scale systems impact personal experiences and interactions?

Reflect: The U.S. Constitution is the cornerstone of our federal government. The Constitution establishes a basic operational framework that enables the three branches of government executive, legislative, and judicial to interact and function as a unit. Embedded in this operational framework are two key principles: separation of powers and a system of checks and balances. Think about how these branches interact and the importance of these checks and balances and separation of powers.
Write: In your initial post, explain why the separation of powers and the system of checks and balances are important for our democracy. Provide recent, real-world examples of the separation of powers and checks/balances in action (one example each). Also, discuss how the Constitution protects individual and group rights. Again, provide a recent real-world example of these Constitutional protections being applied here in the U.S. Fully respond to all parts of the prompt and write your response in your own words. Visit the Quality Check page of The Joint Commission website, enter the name and state of a health care organization within 100 miles of your home, and select search. Take the following steps to find two health care organizations:
- Under the column organization name or number, type the healthcare organization name and state (e.g., Hospital Hurley Medical Center, Michigan).
- Once the chosen organization appears, click the View Accreditation Quality Report link. Once the summary of the report appears, click on the Accreditation National Safety goals link in the left navigation bar. You will be able to view the patient safety goals that were measured for the organization as it is compared to the national average. You will be able to view information that is more specific by clicking the See Detail link for each patient safety goal measured.
Identify two health care organizations that show a need for improvement in one specific area. Note that you may find a hospital that has achieved a high score. However, there is always room for improvement.
After reviewing your findings, state the National Safety Goals and National Quality Improvement Goals where the facilities needed to improve. Compare and contrast the differences between the two facilities. In addition, list two recommendations that you feel would improve that particular area.

Chapter two in the textbook discusses the evolution of our health care system. Much of the evolution was due to the political landscape, societal constraints, consumer demand, escalating costs, and the advancement in technology. We have seen legislation and legal cases that have had a major influence on the health care system. After reading the chapter, review the timeline simulation labeled "Global Perspectives" located on the Summary and Resources page from Chapter 2. Consider how the U.S. healthcare system has evolved over the past 50 years.
Choose one of the influencing factors from the timeline and discuss its impact on the system. Provide your rationale as to why you think it has been revolutionary in changing the system.
Guided Response: Review your classmates posts and find two who posted different factors than you did. Explain how this particular factor has influenced one of the following stakeholders: patient, family, and professionals. Consider how this factor has affected the patient and the family; consider how it has changed the role of the health care professional.
