To complete this discussion, read Chapter 1: Shakespeare’s Language in Sean McEvoy’s book Shakespeare: The Basics, paying special attention to the information in Box 3 about the Great Chain of Being. 

When Cassius says, "The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, / But in ourselves, that we are underlings" (1.2.140-41), he is making reference to the Great Chain of Being. However, what Shakespeare is ultimately saying about this concept here and in other plays can be debated.

• Explain what Cassius means in this passage and relate it to your understanding of the Great Chain of Being.

• Identify and explain another specific reference to these ideas, either from Julius Caesar or from another play we have read in class. Are the attitudes between examples consistent?

• Interpret Shakespeare’s position on how we determine a person’s worth. Is the answer as simple as the Great Chain of Being makes it seem? Why or why not?

• Explain how your own values and beliefs on determining a person’s worth relate to the Great Chain of Being.
