Before you can begin work on your assignments in this class you must first download both the software and assignment data from the ESRI website.

NOTE: You will be required to download several different software programs. The directions for downloading the software are in your textbook. This will take anywhere from 3 to 8 hours depending on your computer and internet issues. You will need the code and URL from the textbook in order to activate the free trial. If you have trouble with the URL from the textbook, you may also use https://esripress.esri.com/bookResources/index.cfm?events.catalog index or http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcgis-for-desktop

If you have problems with installation, you may contact ESRI Customer Service at 888-377-4575. ESRI customer service gives you the option of using a shared-screen program to help solve any problems. This means that they will see your desktop screen and the files you choose to open in front of them. Once your issue has been addressed, you can disconnect them and stop the shared screen option. Our faculty have tested this approach and have been very satisfied with the quick and easy resolutions to downloading issues.

Do not wait until the weekend to begin to install the software. You must install the software in order to complete the Week One Assignment 2: Interacting with Maps, and this discussion.

Once you have the software installed, submit a discussion post that indicates that you have successfully installed ArcGIS, ArcMap, and the assignment data. Discuss any issues you had installing the software and explain the steps needed to resolve the issue. Then, based on the assigned readings and video tutorial this week discuss how GIS can address societal issues from two of the following: criminal investigations, watershed management, pollution movement, urban planning, socio-economic disparity, business and community development, habitat management and sensitive species conservation.

Guided Response:Select two class members that have responded differently than you. When responding to class members, consider their viewpoints on how GIS can be used to address societal issues and discuss how their perspectives expand your ideas about GIS. Discuss the week one tutorial and other resources found on the ESRI site that may interest the class.

Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Properly cite any references in APA format and respond to at least two of your classmates initial posts by Day 7.
