WEEK 4 DISCUSSION 1/DQ 1 POLITICAL SYSTEMS AND AUTHORITY ((LATEST))
Week 4 Discussion 1/dq 1 Political Systems and Authority ((latest))
This week, you are required to answer only one of the following discussion post questions. You should indicate if you chose Option A or Option B in your original post. You are required to respond to at least one peer who chose a different option. For instance, if you chose Option A, you will need to respond to at least one peer who chose Option B. Please note that you will need to watch both required videos and read the Milgram article in order to respond to your peers.
Option A: Political Systems: Understanding American Democracy. Read Chapter 7: Power and Politics. Then, watch the documentary Citizenship and Civic Responsibilities via the Films on Demand section of the Ashford University Library. Respond to the following questions:
·  How egalitarian are citizenship rights in the United States?
·  Identify one social problem that is caused by unequal access to citizenship or civic rights. In other words, what are the negative consequences for everyone when one group is given unequal access to citizenship or civic rights?
·  Provide one possible solution to this social problem.
Be sure to provide concrete examples from the text and from your own research. Refer to the Social Science Research Guide in the Ashford University Library or search for scholarly articles using FindIt@AU. In crafting your response, you must make references to twosources other than the textbook or the assigned documentary; again, the Social Science Research Guide is an invaluable resource to help you locate relevant material. Your initial post must be at least 250 words, excluding the question prompt and the references. Please cite your sources in APA format both in-text and in full reference citations at the end of the post.
Guided Response: Respond to at least two classmates initial posts by Day 7. Please remember that you are required to respond to at least one peer who chose Option B. In your responses to Option A, react to your peers and add to their arguments, rather than simply affirming them. What similarities do you have in your chosen social problems? What differences do you have? Considering your classmates solution to their social problem, do you think it is relevant to the problem? Why, or why not? For instructions on how to respond to peers in Option B, read the guided response below. Please note that you will need to watch the required video and read the Milgram article to respond to peers in Option A. Posts must be at least 75 words in length and demonstrate critical thinking, engagement with course material, and represent a meaningful attempt to engage in discourse.
Option B: Obedience to Authority: Cause and Effect. First, read Stanley Milgrams classic article on his infamous shock experiments in the 1960s. Follow this up by watching Obeying or Resisting Authority: A Psychological Retrospective, available via the Films on Demand section of the Ashford University Library. Read Chapter 7: Power and Politics. Then, address each of the following questions.
·  What specific factors would cause people to continue to shock other people, past the perceived thresholds of extreme pain, unconsciousness, or even death?
·  Provide three different explanations for this behavior, utilizing the three perspectives we have learned so far: the anthropological, political, and sociological perspectives.
·  In other words, to what specific causal factor would an anthropologist attribute this behavior? What about a political scientist? A sociologist?
Be sure to provide concrete examples from the text and from your own research. In crafting your response, you must make reference to at least twosources beyond the textbook or the assigned documentary. Refer to the Social Science Research Guide in the Ashford University Library or search for scholarly articles using FindIt@AU. Your initial post must be at least 250 words, excluding the question prompt and the references. Please cite your sources in APA format both in-text and in full reference citations at the end of the post.
Guided Response: Respond to at least two classmates initial posts by Day 7. Remember that you are required to respond to at least one peer who chose Option A. In your responses to Option B, choose one of your peers three perspectives and discuss how your explanation is similar to theirs, or different, and how. For instructions on how to respond to peers in Option A, read the guided response above. Please note that you will need to watch the required video to respond to peers in Option A. Posts must be at least 75 words in length and demonstrate critical thinking, engagement with course material, and represent a meaningful attempt to engage in discourse.
Carefully review the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate this Discussion Thread.
