Prepare: Read Chapter 5: Basic News Writing in Writing for the Mass Media. The author of our text argues that, The most important words a journalist writes are headlines.
Reflect: Take a look at the following headlines and consider why each is ineffective as written. What might be a more effective version of each headline?
• Explosion-fire damages tire company and injures owner
• FBI probes attorney’s death by hanging in Midville jail
• Custody war looms over kidnap victim
• Earlier deadlines and new nightmares for some taxpayers
• Two children caught in house fire die from smoke
Write: Write a 250- to 300-word response that explains the importance of a well-written headline. Explain your view giving examples from revised versions of the above headlines and from a recent news article you located from the Associated Press. In your initial post, you must include at least one in-text citation from the reading material and an additional in-text citation from a scholarly source that you locate. At the end of your post, include your name and a full reference for all sources cited in the body of your post. All citaitons and references must adhere to APA style guidelines as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
